Your Step-by-Step Guide to Maintaining ZHC Colored Hair Extensions

The Ultimate Colored Hair Extensions Care Routine

Zogie's Hair Collection

IMPORTANT:

Hair extensions from Zogie's Hair Collection should always be installed by a licensed or certified extension stylist. Any self-installation is done entirely at your own risk. Zogie's Hair Collection cannot guarantee results when extensions are not professionally installed.

Caring for colored raw hair extensions requires high-quality professional products and proper maintenance. When choosing Zogie's Hair Collection extensions, it’s important to be ready for the commitment needed to maintain their quality and color.

STEP 1: PREPARE

Start by gathering your clip-ins or wefts together and hold them from the top of the weft. Place them under running water in the sink and thoroughly wet the hair using cool water until the extensions are fully saturated.

STEP 2: CLARIFY

If your extensions have heavy product buildup, begin with a clarifying shampoo. If the hair only needs a light wash, you can skip directly to Step 3.

Dispense 2–3 pumps of clarifying shampoo into your hands and spread it evenly. Apply the shampoo gently to the hair using downward circular motions, making sure the product is distributed through the strands.

Avoid scrubbing or rough movements, as this can cause tangling or damage. Once the shampoo has been applied, rinse thoroughly using cool to lukewarm water. Hot water can strip color and cause faster fading.

A detangling brush designed for extensions is recommended to minimize breakage. Brushes like the Wet Brush are ideal because they glide through both wet and dry hair with less tension.

Color-safe shampoos are essential because they cleanse the hair without removing color pigments.

Recommended clarifying shampoos available in the UK & USA:

- Malibu C Un-Do-Goo Clarifying Shampoo

- Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three Clarifying Shampoo

Avoid washing your extensions too frequently. Overwashing can lead to dryness and dullness. Only wash them when necessary to maintain longevity.

Always cleanse your extensions gently and rinse thoroughly to ensure no product residue remains.

STEP 3: MOISTURIZING SHAMPOO

Follow the clarifying wash with a hydrating, color-safe shampoo to restore moisture.

Recommended product:

- Pureology Hydrate Shampoo (widely available in the UK and USA)

If your blonde or highlighted extensions develop yellow or brassy tones, you may use a purple or blue shampoo before this step to neutralize the color.

Leave the purple shampoo on the hair for around 3–5 minutes to tone effectively.

Recommended toning shampoo:

- Olaplex No.4P Blonde Enhancing Toning Shampoo

Hair discoloration can sometimes occur due to mineral buildup. For example:

- Green tones may be caused by chlorine

- Peach or orange tones can result from iron deposits, makeup, or sunscreen residue

To remove mineral buildup, you can occasionally use:

- L’Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox Shampoo

STEP 4: TREAT

After shampooing, gently squeeze excess water from the hair before applying a deep treatment mask.

Choose either a hydrating mask or a strengthening treatment depending on your extensions' condition.

For all colored extensions from Zogie's Hair Collection, we strongly recommend using a K18 treatment during the first 6 washes.

Apply the mask and leave it on for at least 4 minutes. Do not rinse. Afterward, continue with your leave-in conditioner, heat protectant, and styling products.

After the first six washes, treatments can be done every 3–4 weeks.

Recommended repair treatments:

- K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask

- Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector

K18 works deep within the hair fiber to repair broken keratin chains and rebuild damaged bonds caused by coloring or bleaching. In just a few minutes, it helps improve strength, elasticity, shine, and bounce.

For hydration, you can also use:

- Amika Soulfood Nourishing Hair Mask

- Amika Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Hair Mask

STEP 5: CONDITION

Conditioning is essential for keeping your extensions smooth, soft, and manageable.

Apply conditioner mainly to the mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the root area or the weft base. Spread the product through the hair using gentle downward motions and leave it on for about 3 minutes.

Finish with a cool water rinse to seal the cuticles and enhance shine.

Recommended conditioner:

- Pureology Hydrate Conditioner

STEP 6: GLOSS OR GLAZE

If your extensions begin to look dull, frizzy, or tangled, a gloss or glaze treatment can help restore shine and smoothness. These treatments typically last 1–2 weeks.

Recommended gloss treatments:

- Ouai Hair Gloss (also provides heat protection)

- Kérastase Chroma Absolu High Shine Gloss Treatment

- Pureology Color Fanatic Top Coat + Clear Hair Gloss

STEP 7: LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER & OIL

Apply a leave-in conditioner to damp hair to add moisture and protect the hair from heat styling.

Recommended product:

- Pureology Color Fanatic Multi-Tasking Leave-In Spray

After applying leave-in conditioner, use a small dime-sized amount of lightweight oil.

Great options include:

- Argan oil

- Coconut oil

- Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil

Apply oil while the hair is still slightly damp, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends.

During colder months, you may also add a small amount of glycerin oil to help retain moisture and prevent dryness.

Glycerin is a powerful humectant that attracts moisture from the air and locks it into the hair, helping keep extensions hydrated and less prone to breakage.

STEP 8: AIR DRY OR BLOW DRY

When blow drying your extensions, use low heat or a cool setting.

Avoid brushing or combing the hair while it is very wet during blow drying, as colored hair is more fragile when damp. Instead, use your fingers to gently separate the strands while drying.

Begin brushing only once the hair is about 90% dry.

Alternatively, you can allow the extensions to air dry completely or air dry most of the way before finishing with a blow dryer.

STEP 9: STYLE

The outer layer of the hair strand, known as the cuticle, acts as a protective shield. When the cuticle lies flat, the hair appears smooth, shiny, and less prone to tangling.

Excessive heat can lift the cuticle, which causes the hair to lose moisture and become dry or frizzy.

If you plan to wear your extensions straight, consider wrapping the hair at night after straightening (similar to wrapping a silk press). This helps the cuticles settle and keeps the hair smooth.

If you recently used a gloss treatment within the last two weeks, you can style your extensions immediately.

If not, a smoothing spray can help prevent frizz during styling.

Recommended styling products:

- Color Wow Dream Coat Extra Strength Anti-Frizz Treatment

- Redken Triple Dry 15 Texturizing Spray (great for oil control and curl hold)

- OSiS+ Sparkler Shine Spray for a lightweight glossy finish

Spray styling products from an arm’s length away and brush lightly while applying for even distribution.
